Hello Book Nerds and happy Monday to you all! I hope everyone had a great weekend enjoying the beautiful weather. Maybe you spent time with family, decided to go on a day trip or just relax at home! Whatever you did I hope you had the best of time doing it! I know last Sunday I said I would be bringing the sequel post to the novel I read Fireborne, Flamefall, yesterday but there was a slight change in plans. I had the privilege of spending my Sunday with my favorite person in the world and celebrating his birthday! I love bringing new content to you all each week, but I love spending quality time with my loved ones more, so I’m sure you’ll all forgive me for bringing you this new post a day late.
A Masterpiece Explored
Flamefall by Rosaria Munda is a work of art! A true masterpiece! Once again the world of Callipolis is explored and the revolution that caused both Annie and Lee to become orphans is more thoroughly traversed. Which let me just say there is blood on both sides. On the one hand you have a tyrannical regime and on the other you have an oversimplified coup. I mean whichever way you slice it, it’s gonna be ugly. Yet even with the backstory being unfolded and more origin story is revealed for both Lee and Annie, Rosaria Munda just couldn’t help but throw new wrench into the picture. We no longer have a dual point of view, with just Annie and Lee. Nope now we have a third point of view, from none other than a boy from New Pythos, Griff Gareson, he is the new wrench.
This new POV came as a bit of a shock to me at the end of Fireborne, but with the threat of New Pythos in Fireborne not being resolved by the end of the book I can completely understand this added POV. I found that I had mixed emotions about Griff’s character in Flamefall. It took me about half way through the continued story to really determine what my feelings on this boy were. By the end of Flamefall I was sold on Griff Gareson! He’s got a fiery attitude and he’s probably just as stubborn as Annie and Lee, and the quality that I was most fond of was his persistence in not giving up on what’s important to him. I thought Rosaria Munda did an excellent job on his personality.
Communication Woes
Now, I don’t know if I mentioned poor communication between characters as a pet peeve of mine while reading but WOW do Lee and Annie have some serious communication problems. I mean I knew they did in Fireborne and I am fully aware that these communication issues aren’t just going to go away at a drop of the hat, but I didn’t think it was going to get worse! Simple communication problems too, I mean come on people! Instead of assuming you know what the other person is doing because of something you saw, which probably isn’t what you think it is, here’s an idea…JUST GO TALK TO THEM! But no, can anything be that simple in a fantasy novel, of course not!
Heartbreaking Twists
Did Rosaria Munda break my heart right at the end of Fireborne? Yes. Did she fix my broken heart in Flamefall? Uh not quite. Rosaria Munda more or less took my already broken heart and proceeded to put it through a woodchipper for the majority of Flamefall. I blame this on the lack of communication between Annie and Lee and the impossible situations that they both unfortunately found themselves in during the events of Flamefall. Just like at the end of Fireborne Rosaria almost puts things back together, at least for a small period of time (roughly an hour) before the world takes a sharp turn onto disaster and despair boulevard. I didn’t think it could get any worse and yet, Rosaria somehow managed to twist the knife that wasn’t fully out of my chest even deeper with the bombshell revelation in the last chapter. I think I had to physically pick my jaw off the floor after reading this piece of information. Not only did it come as a shock to the system, but this critical bit of information could have changed the course of so many events that took place in this sequel!!
More To Come
I am absolutely hooked on this series and yes I am already a decent chunk through the third and final book, Furysong! Unrelated side note: the third book that I ordered is not the same size or width as the first two books in the series and yes my eye twitches just slightly when looking at all three of them on my bookshelf! But with that said I am delighted finally bring this post to you all and I am even more excited to bring you the conclusion in the near future. I will see you all next Sunday Book Nerds! Have a fantastic week!
